Astigmatism

Astigmatism is due to an error in the curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye.

Unfortunately, there are visual problems that people are born with, and no amount of prevention prevents symptoms. Some of the most important:

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a kind of distorted vision caused by the fault curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye. Most people with astigmatism can clearly see objects directly in front of him, but their peripheral vision – perhaps the top and bottom or left and right, or diagonally – is faulty.

Usually, the glasses correct the problem. Most people with astigmatism are born with the trend, but can also be caused by eye disease or injury. The latter type is more difficult to correct. Whatever the cause, early treatment is crucial. Children in particular may be at permanent risk of impaired vision, if the astigmatism is not corrected early.

Cataract

A cataract is a clouding of the eye that causes obscured vision. People with this condition see their surroundings as if looking through a waterfall – hence the name of the disease. Other symptoms include

* Sensitivity to light and glare

* Fading or yellowing of colors

* Poor night vision

* Halos around lights

Congenital Eye Disorders

The exact cause of cataracts is unknown. Aging may play an important role. About half of Americans aged 65 and 74 suffer from cataracts, with this part of jumping to 70 percent among people over 75 years. However, cataracts can also occur in young infants, whose mother still caught rubella during pregnancy.

There is ongoing research to find out for certain vitamins and minerals can prevent or slow the development of cataracts. Damage the lens a long-term use of corticosteroid drugs and high doses of radiation (eg X-rays) can cause disease. Overexposure to UV rays, some of the sunlight, it also increases the risk of cataracts.

Although usually curable, cataracts can lead to blindness if not treated. If necessary, surgical treatment restores vision by 95 percent of cataract operations. The procedure is usually performed as an outpatient. The surgery is performed, however, that when the cataract is interfering with daily life.

Years ago, patients had to wear special glasses with thick lenses after cataract surgery – not anymore. Now, general surgeons, an intraocular lens implant, a small plastic disc of light that produces a distorted picture. There is a loophole: Because this is not a natural target, can not concentrate on the images of near and far. Physician and patient must decide before correction surgery of choice.
