Pajama Jeans are made in China using a material called Dermi Soft, a patented blend of cotton and spandex that looks like dark-wash denim but feels like old-fashioned sweatpants. They’re designed to mimic jeans, with five pockets, contrast stitching and brass rivets. In place of belt loops, the waistband conceals a pink drawstring. And in place of a zipper, a mock fly is stitched across the front seam.

Hampton Direct, the Vermont-based distributor, specializes in problem-solving “made for TV” products. Its other recent successes include the Wonder Hanger and the Total Pillow. “Pajamas you live in. Jeans you sleep in,” the tagline suggests. This implies that real denim jeans are no longer jeans you want to live in. No question, Pajama Jeans are more comfortable than all the skinny jeans, Leggings and low-rise, plumbers’-butt and muffin-top-enhancing denims in our closets.

Boyfriend jeans, with their more forgiving fit, haven’t been much of an improvement. Their bottom-heavy look flatters only the tallest, skinniest figures. Which come to think of it is also the case with skinny jeans and leggings? On the home page for the Pajama Jean, the gals from The View are talking about how great this jean is since you could eat your way through the holidays and your jeans would still fit.

Currently, Pajama Jeans are sold in just one style, boot-cut, and one length, 31 inches, in sizes from extra-small to 3X (Hampton also saw a gap in the plus-size market). (A similar product with the same material is sold at Macy’s.) But Makurdsik said they’ll be widely available in retail stores by the second quarter of this year. And different styles, lengths and colors will be available by next year.
